Google provides a free service that allows you to list your business on Google Maps and in Google Search results known as the Google Business Profile. But are you allowed to have a Google Business Profile as a remote business? Let’s talk about it.

Can Remote Business Have Google Business Profiles?

Yes, so long as your business sells a service, physical good, or digital good you can create a Google Business Profile. During the setup Google will initially ask for an address to verify the business but you can learn turn this address off if you do not serve customers at this location.

How does my business appear in search results and Google Maps if I do not have an in-person store?

Google allows you to select a service area to inform customers about the locations you serve. So you have a lawn care business in Detroit, Michigan and you go to people’s houses to complete that lawn care then your service area would be Detroit. If you have an eCommerce website and you sell products in the United States then you would put your service area as the United States.

What if I don’t have a physical address or don’t want to provide my address?

Google requires an address initially for verification, but you don’t have to display it on your listing. If you are remote worker try and select a stable or personal address that is reliable in the general area that you provide services. This helps with your business showing up better in search results and helps with postcard verification when needed.

Is it possible to remove a bad review from my Google Business Profile?

No it is not possible to remove a bad review from your profile. Unfortunately you may receive review that are unfavorable or not true. The best way to handle these is to leave a polite reply.

How do I complete verification on my Google Business Profile?

You have multiple ways to complete verification and sometimes you won’t have all these options available to you from what I have seen. The methods of verification include a postcard by mail (very common), phone call or text (less common), email (not common), video. For the video you will be asked to record your workspace. The postcard is the most common and you will need to wait for a postcard to arrive in the mail which includes a verification code that you need to provide Google.

My Google Business Profile was suspended/disabled/unlisted what do I do?

If you Google Business Profile was deactivated or unlisted you will need to review the notice provided by Google in your account. Often it is related to verification or content found in your listing that is not allowed. If your address is invalid or you have violated the guidelines you will not to make adjustments before being re-listed again. What happens if I delete my Google Business Profile?

If you just to delete your profile under Business Profile Settings you will no longer have access to your profile and your information will be removed. Even after deletion Google may retain some data for their records for legal/operational reasons. You can create a Google Business Profile later with the same business name so long as you didn’t have any previous flags on your account at the time of deletion.
