For Americans you can enter Argentina as a tourist for up to 90 days and extendable up to another 90 days once per year without applying for a visa.
With some recent changes by Javier Milei, you will now also be required to hold valid Health Insurance before entering Argentina.
For longer stays you can consider applying for the Digital Nomad's Visa which last for 6 months and extendable for another 6 months.
Migraciones (the Argentine immigration authority) has not yet updated their website with the latest details.
If you have overstayed your visa you will need to pay the Habitación de Salida and then leave the country within 10 days of payment.
If your visa has not expired you can leave and reenter the country to reset it.
With stricter immigration, border hopping to reset your visa like going to Uruguay for a day via ferry or paying the Habitación de Salida multiple times may cause potential difficulty reentering the country with these law changes.
At this time, the only clearly enforced requirement is having valid travel health insurance. Other changes such as tighter checks or limitations on extensions and reentries remain uncertain and may depend on how the new decree is applied in practice.
